About me

Starting from 01/11/2025, I'm an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the Department of Computer Science, Systems and Communication (DISCo) of the University of Milano-Bicocca, where I'm a member of the MUDI (Modeling Uncertainty, Decisions and Interaction) lab. I obtained the National Scientific Habilitation for Associate Professorship in Computer Science in 2024.
Previously, I was a Researcher at the IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio, the major Italian research hospital devoted to orthopaedics and traumatology. Going backward, I obtained my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Milano-Bicocca, working in the MUDI lab.

My research is in the field of trustworthy AI and aims at the development and analysis of AI systems that are robust, reliable and appropriable. In particular, my research can be situated at the intersection of uncertainty management, machine learning and human-AI interaction, and regards both the theoretical and foundational aspects of the discipline, as well as Applications in high-risk sectors (primarily, healthcare). Therefore, I'm primarily interested in (and authored publications related to):
  • Weakly supervised learning
  • Cautious inference, uncertainty quantification and conformal prediction
  • Fair, Accountable and Transparent ML
  • Applications of ML and uncertainty modeling in medical decision-making
  • Human-AI interaction and user-centered AI
My work has appeared in the top-ranked venues focusing on AI, uncertainty representation and human-computer interaction (including AAAI, CHI, ECAI, ECML, CSCW as well as several Q1 journals), as well as in health-oriented or multi-disciplinary venues (JMIR, AIME, IJMEDI, CCLM). My research has been awarded multiple international awards (including the EurAI Award for Best Dissertation in Artificial Intelligence), has been featured in popular science journals. I've also been included in the ranking of Top 2% World Scientists (2024, 2025). I'm also interested in, and have authored publications on, the following topics:
  • Formalisms for representing uncertainty (rough sets, fuzzy sets, belief functions, imprecise probabilities)
  • Theoretical computer science (esp. learning theory/theoretical ML, dynamical systems, logics, algorithm design)
  • Robustness, data reliability and robust ML
  • Socio-technical and philosophical issues related to computer science and AI
I really believe in the co-operative nature of science (and mathematics), and thus I'm always open to collaborations or simply to chat: if you want, you can contact me via email (see left column!). Also, do not hesitate to contact me for things which are not work related (even more fun!), including having a chat on my (many) hobbies, which include:
  • Traveling (esp. in East Asia and Europe)
  • Videogames (esp. role-play, action/adventure and metroidvania games)
  • Reading novels (esp. sci-fi, magical realism, fictional history)
  • Movies, series and animation
  • Capoeira
  • Language learning (I'm fluent in Italian and English, have basic command of Portuguese and French, and passing knowledge of Japanese, Ukrainian and Mandarin Chinese)
  • Japanese pop culture
  • Dancesport (esp. Argentine dances and jazz dances)
